About Pushpagiri

History of Buddhism in Orissa dates back to the time of Buddha himself. It is one of the oldest religions known to the mankind. This serene religion has the beautiful 2500 years of history. Right from the 6th century B.C. to at least the 15th – 16th centuries AD Buddhism has extensively influenced the religious life of the people in Orissa.

Buddhism was almost lost for about a thousand long years, until the remains of the marvellous site were rediscovered with the spades of archaeologists. The recent archaeological exploration has reported more than 340 Buddhist sites, out of which 19 sites have been excavated so far.
